LucisArt
The LucisArt plugins for Photoshop create highly original special effects, using a patented image-processing algorithm called Differential Hysteresis Processing (DHP). LucisArt 3 has two versions, LucisArt 3 ED (Enhance Detail) and LucisArt 3 ED/SE (LucisArt 3 ED bundled with LucisArt 3 SE (Special Effects)).
Like many enhancement packages, this software can reveal detail in bright and shadowed areas simultaneously, but it also provides a set of tools to change the appearance of the image so that it resembles the work of certain artists. For example, the Klimpt feature gives a sparkly, surrealistic effect not entirely unlike that of Gustav Klimpt. Applied to portrait shots, the effects succeed in turning a nondescript photograph into a vibrant image.
Comment
The LucisArt plugins are among the few programs of their kind that deliver unexpected and aesthetically pleasing results. Before dismissing either of them as just another art simulation package, you should check out the examples on the vendor's site. Of course, none of the works can be achieved without artistic input of your own, but you'll be aided by a powerful set of tools if you use either of the LucisArt versions or the more expensive pro version.
The features of LucisArt are a subset of those available in the vendor's high-end, PC-only, standalone product, Lucis Pro 6.0 (see: www.lucispro.com).
