Society for Photographic Education

The Society for Photographic Education (SPE) is a non-profit membership organization, based at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, that provides a forum for discussing photography as a means of creative expression and cultural insight. Founded in the early 1960s it held its first annual national conference in Chicago in 1963. It seeks to promote a broader understanding of photography in all its forms.

Members

Most of SPE's 1,800 members are fine art photographers, but many are educators, curators, critics, historians and artists. Members can participate in an SPE caucus, such as the Multicultural Caucus or the Women's Caucus.

Publication

SPE's magazine "exposure" is a peer-reviewed journal of photographic education. Exposure is published twice a year in Spring (March) and Fall (September). The SPE website has a useful list of upcoming photographic exhibitions in the United States.
