Synk

Synk lets you back up your Mac, either wholly or selectively, to other Macs and PCs or to external hard disks including iPods, at scheduled times. For expert users it has many sophisticated features, including full N-way synchronization which the vendor claims as an industry first. Synk 6 is said to be up to 100 times faster than competing products.

The Synk 6 product line has 3 different editions: Synk Backup, for archival backup of the whole system or selected folders; Synk Standard, with 2-way synchronization and additional customization of the process, and Synk Professional, with "deep configurability" for expert users. It is localized in English, Finnish, French, German, and Italian.

Comment

When he was still a graduate student, Benjamin Rister took over development of Synk from its previous author Randall Voth. He re-wrote the whole program, then later formed a company to do it all over again. The result is an outstanding product, more flexible than Apple's Time Machine, being able to work with networked servers running Windows or Linux, and requiring minimal space to hold the transferred data. Its speed is one of its key features, likely to endear the product to busy photographers and other users.
