Neat Image
ABSoft claims that the advanced algorithms for noise reduction in Neat Image go beyond even the wavelet-based methods offered by other vendors. Neat Image software builds "device noise profiles," thereby adapting noise reduction to the specific imaging device such as a DSLR or a scanner.
The noise profiles, similar in concept to color profiles, are now available for many different devices including cameras from Canon, Casio, Contax, Epson, Fujifilm, HP, Kodak, Kyocera, Leica, Konika-Minolta, Mamiya, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, Ricoh, Samsung, Sanyo, Sigma, Sony and Toshiba.
Neat Image standalone edition supports TIFF, JPEG and BMP files, but the plugins support any format that can be opened by the host software, including PSD, JPEG2000, RAW, and DNG.
Comment
There are multiple editions of Neat Image -- and it has to be said that the combinations and pricing are a little confusing. Standalone or plugin, Windows or Mac, Photoshop or Aperture, Home or Pro, 8-bits or 16-bits per channel -- you choose and look up the price accordingly.
Just a glance at the samples given on the ABSoft website indicate that Neat Image is highly effective, even without reading the endorsements by leading photographers. It can even clean up captured TV frames, completely removing color banding and other artifacts without destroying detail.
