Slideroll

Slideroll is an online service that allows the user to upload images or import them directly from a Flickr account, then create and display a slide show. Once you've made the show you can then publish it directly to MySpace or YouTube.

Slideroll has several features that you would expect from specialist desktop software, with pan and zoom, text overlay and a recently added capability for a soundtrack.

There are two editions: Basic, limited to 100 uploads/10 slide shows; and Pro, with 5000 uploads and unlimited slide shows.

Comment

This online service is more than just a novelty: it offers some genuinely useful features, especially the ability to zoom in and out of an image or to pan within it. That said, it's still quite difficult to create an entertaining show in the tiny format provided, unless you have a good creative imagination.

Once you have created a slide show online you can download it as a Quicktime movie, post it to your website, or email it to friends. It would make a good class exercise for first-year media students.
